Republican billionaire Donald J. Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States on Friday, 20 January. President Trump started his inaugural address to the American people that this is their moment and their celebration. He also said that this is not a transfer of power from one president to another or from one party to another. Instead, this is a transfer of power from Washington DC to the American people.
“January 20th, 2017 will be remembered as the day the people became the rulers of this nation again. The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer. Everyone is listening to you now. You came by the tens of millions to become a part of a historic movement, the likes of which the world has never seen before,” he said.
No sooner did the new President begin his address, it started to rain. But this did not stop him from going ahead and slamming the Obama administration and the previous governments, saying that for years Washington flourished but the people did not share in its wealth. He went on to say that a nation is built to serve its citizens and described the just and reasonable demands of righteous people and a righteous public. He vowed to stop the “American carnage” right here, right now.
President Trump continued that for too long, America had been spending trillions of dollars overseas while its own infrastructure fell into disrepair and decay. And then he declared, “From this day forward, it’s going to be only America first, America first.” He promised to build friendship and seek goodwill with nations across the world and to reinforce old alliances and form new ones to eradicate “radical Islamic terrorism” from the face of the earth. Further, he thrice mentioned to protect borders, bring back jobs and wealth and all of this by following two “simple” rules: Buy American and hire American.
The American people were told that there should be no fear and that they were all protected by God. On behalf of the people, Trump said that they will no longer accept politicians who are “all talk but no action, constantly complaining, but never doing anything about it.” “The time for empty talk is over. Now arrives the hour of action,” he said. He also tried to ease the fear of Americans and people across the world, who are concerned regarding his policies of immigration and more importantly, Americanism, by saying that whether they are black or brown or white, they all bleed the same red blood of patriots.
Given the controversial figure that the 70-year-old has been in the past, there was unease among the people and the liberal community, who have for long been anxious about the new administration, attitudes and policies. Protests broke out in Washington DC and New York City as thousands were in dismay, owing to the sentiments expressed by Trump against several communities on several occasions.
However, the question that remains is that whether Trump is fit to hold the highest office in America. The intentions that he has expressed all throughout his electoral campaign regarding policies of immigration and minorities are disturbing, and in fatal contradiction with the principles on the basis of which the United States of America was built. Since things are the way they are, all that can be done is to let time take its course.
