Sampooran Singh Kalra, famously known as GULZAR, started his career as a lyricist for ‘Bandini’ and later got into direction with ‘Mere Apne’.
Born in Jhelum, Pakistan, he came to India after the partition and his scars can be felt through the verses he wrote. On his 83rd birthday, we bring to you a glimpse of his most beautiful collection of ghazals and trivenis in the book, “KUCH TOH KAHIYE”.
WHAT IS A TRIVENI?
In the words of Gulzar, “I called it triveni because the first two lines meet like the Ganga and the Yamuna and complete a thought, it forms a poem on its own. But beneath the two there is the subterranean flow of another, the Saraswati. Hidden. Not visible to the eye. The triveni intends to reveal the Saraswati. The third line, lost in the first two, either change the meaning of the poem altogether, its focus, or gives it a surprising twist, in the process creating an entirely new poem altogether.’
